Review: Smart Tec WheyFX (Strawberry & Cream)

Posted by Andrew On October - 6 - 2011

Smart-Tec are a supplement company based in Glasgow, Scotland. With a wealth of protein supplements available on the market how will their addition fare in comparison? Find out after the jump.

Having tried a multitue of different protein supplements during my training career (albeit still in its infancy) I think it is high time I start to review them so the general public can get a better idea of what to go for if and when choosing. So this brings us to my first review which is of Smart-Tec’s WheyFX range.

WheyFX is a blended protein made from whey isolates and concentrates which is part of the Smart-Tec Strength and Size range. It can be bought in a range of flavours from Strawberry & Cream to Banana with tubs ranging in sizes from 924g to 2.27kg.

Smart-Tec are a relatively new player in the game but that doesn’t mean anything in terms of quality of their product. The review will be based on a few criteria namely taste, mixability, nutritional profile and affordability.

Taste – So far I have only sampled the Strawberry & Cream and Chocolate varieties of WheyFX. The strawberry flavour is extremely potent and very sweet. It has a more defined strawberry flavour than any other strawberry protein I have tasted thus far. In water the taste stays strong but as expected will diminish the more liquid is added, specifically water. Mixed with milk it tastes as though you are drinking any commercial milkshake or smoothie. I haven’t tried mixing it with crushed ice yet but it is definitely on my “to-do” list.

Mixability – WheyFX mixes extremely well with no gritty after taste or clumps of powder left floating about. I have tried it in both a conventional grid topped shaker, a blender ball shaker and the massive Pro Shaker 60 all with equal results. I have yet to try it in a powered blender but as you can see from the taste section, it is in the future.

Nutritional Profile – This is the real nitty gritty of most supplements, how and where it will fit into your dietary needs. Per 33g serving you are given 127 calories, 24.8g protein, 3.3g carbohydrates and 1.8g of fat. Along with the afore mentioned macronutrients you are also given amino acids (BCAA’s included). The amino acid profile is pretty stacked with your usual players such as arginine, glutamic acid, isoleucine*, leucine*, tryptophan and valine*. The amounts of aminos you get are listed as g/100g so when reading the label be sure to recalculate if you are tracking aminos.

Affordability – Smart-Tec WheyFX is reasonably priced within the market at £44.99 per tub off of Smart-Tec’s website. Discounts are available if you buy multiple tubs which can see you paying £35.99 per tub if you but 10 in the one shopping spree. Within a tub it is stated that there is 69 servings each, this is only dependant on the amount of shakes you plan to make per day though so it could last you a while or not long at all. In a saturated market such as sport supplements Smart-Tec’s WheyFX is reasonably priced with discounts available if you look hard enough.

Conclusion – As stated earlier I have tried many diffferent protein supplements from many different companies. I can safely say that Smart-Tec’s WheyFX ranks quite high in all areas. They have developed a high quality, excellent tasting protein that doesn’t hit your wallet hard and will last you over a month easily. The one thing I would say is that the serving sizes are a little odd. You are advised that one serving is 33g which is 1.5 level scoops of protein. Now don’t get me wrong this is a little gripe but trying to get exactly half a scoop or even close to it can be quite a chore I would rather just have it say 1 scoop or 2 scoops be the serving size. Without further ado here are the scores for the different categories:

  • Taste – 9/10
  • Mixability – 10/10
  • Nutritional Profile – 9/10
  • Affordability – 8/10

If you are looking for a great tasting, decently priced protein product then Smart-Tec has your answer. Have a look at their website for more information or shop around the web for other deals.
